Imagine yourself landing your dry fly in front of a rising trout or heading out as darkness falls and hearing the crash as a sea trout explodes over your fly or just as your fly is swinging through the pool it goes tight and you find yourself attached to a salmon!
The Fox & Hounds hotel is steeped in fishing history with catch records available dating back to the 1940s. With 6 miles of the river Taw for guests to explore there are many, varied fly fishing opportunities for the visiting angler and for small stream wild trout, sea trout and the occasional salmon the hotel provides a perfect base for a fishing break. We are one of the very few hotels who have their own in house fly fishing school of experienced full time AAPGAI instructors able to offer the highest quality in fly fishing instruction or guiding on an hourly or daily basis.
If you are new to fly fishing we are able to offer half or full day courses on our trout lake in the hotel’s grounds. For the more experienced angler the lake is the perfect venue to have a tune up or to add a few new casts to the armoury such as spey casting or double hauling.
Our instructors are also able to take you further afield. How about heading up on to Dartmoor in search of moorland trout or to the coast to try saltwater fly fishing? The fishing school is able to tailor a fishing package to suit your fishing needs.
The team are also available for tale telling over a pint in the “snug” to keep you up to date as to how things are fishing and what is catching.
Complete Beginners can learn to fly fish on our 2 casting lakes - Book a half or whole day lesson and overnight accommodation as a special treat for someone.

Fishing Breaks
Our 3 night fishing breaks from £185 per person offer the most flexibility and allow up to 72 hours fishing on the River with 3 nights accommodation.
Our Learn to Fish a River package includes 3 nights B&B and a full days tuition/guiding for £300 (only available to book in advance)
Our Advanced Angler break includes 3 days B&B and a half day of intensive tuition for £265 (advanced booking required)

Fishing Report 2011
2011 proved a bountiful season with well over 1000 nice sized wild brown trout on the board and a whopper of a Seatrout caught by Tom the barman! The salmon came too late for the season end unfortunately as the summer was so dry.
