Fishing in Devon

Imagine yourself landing your dry fly in front of a rising trout or heading out as darkness falls and hearing the crash as a sea trout explodes over your fly or just as your fly is swinging through the pool it goes tight and you find yourself attached to a salmon!

The Fox and Hounds hotel is steeped in fishing history with catch records available dating back to the 1940’s. With 5 miles of the River Taw for guests to explore there are varied fly fishing opportunities for small stream wild trout, sea trout and the occasional salmon.  We have divided it up into 6 beats that are rotated on a daily basis ensuring that you will see a new beat each day.

Fly Fishing School

We are one of the very few hotels with their own fly fishing school on site, with experienced full time AAPGAI instructors able to offer the highest quality in fly fishing instruction, plus guiding on an hourly or daily basis (pre-booking advisable). Click here for more details on the Devon School of Fly Fishing.

If you are new to fly fishing we offer half or full day courses on the trout lake in the hotel's grounds. For the more experienced angler the lake is the perfect venue to have a tune up or to learn a few new casts, such as spey casting or double hauling. Complete beginners can learn to fly fish on our 2 casting lakes, with fishing breaks available that include a half or whole day lesson and overnight accommodation - an ideal gift.

Prices for guiding or tuitions

  • ½ day guiding or tuition - £120 for 1 person £150 for 2
  • Full day guiding or tuition - £175 for 1 person or £235 for 2

Prices for 3 or more people are available on request.
